Freen and Becky’s First Meeting, February 2021

Freen Sarocha and Becky Armstrong first met in February 2021, at a pre-production workshop for their first series together, Secret Crush On You. Two shy strangers, one awkward first day and a walk to the supermarket: this is the first event in the archive, and the start of FreenBecky.

The setting

Two strangers in a workshop room

They met during the pre-production workshops for Secret Crush On You, their first series together, in the acting sessions where a cast learns to work together before the cameras roll. Becky had already started. Freen arrived about two weeks late because of other commitments, walking into a room where everyone else had already found their feet.

Neither of them knew it yet, but that series would lead to GAP: The Series and the pairing fans now know as FreenBecky.

First impressions

Both of them were shy

In their earliest joint video features and live press appearances, including POP LIVE, they often looked back on meeting at the Secret Crush On You workshop before they led GAP together. Both told the story of that first day, and neither was as confident as the other one thought.

Freen

“Quiet, calm and beautiful”

Freen thought Becky was very quiet, calm and beautiful. She was nervous and shy herself, and wasn’t sure whether Becky, who is Thai-British and younger, spoke Thai or whether she should switch to English, and she didn’t know what Becky liked to drink, so she bought several different drinks to be safe. Becky was 18 at the time, and Freen remembers thinking she looked very young.

Stern at first, then warm and funny

Becky thought Freen was very beautiful, but her straight face made her look stern, and Becky found her a bit intimidating. Shy and introverted back then, Becky didn’t know how to be the one to say hello first, so she waited. Once they started talking, she soon realized Freen was extremely warm and funny.

Breaking the ice

One walk, one cola

In the end it was Freen who made the first move. She took Becky for a walk to a nearby supermarket and bought her a cola. It was a small thing, and it is still the moment fans point to as the real start of FreenBecky.

From strangers to FreenBecky

They spent their spare time together through the workshops and their first series, and the chemistry came naturally. Their bond grew quickly from close friends into a strong, supportive partnership.
