Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai opened Thailand Local BCG Plus Expo 2024 on Friday 21 June 2024, on the BTS Skywalk on the third floor of Siam Square One. Freen Sarocha and Becky Armstrong joined him on stage for what the ministry billed as a surprise Pride Month celebration, marking both Pride and the marriage equality bill Thailand’s Senate had passed that week.

The minister told the crowd that love comes in every form, and said Freen and Becky wanted to do something useful for the country. Becky said she was happy to be part of the day, that eco-friendly products suit a new generation, and congratulated everyone on marriage equality after a long fight. Freen said she had felt part of the project since filming The Loyal Pin, where she first saw the community products up close, and added that everyone is equally human and free to be who they are.

BCG stands for bio-circular-green, the government’s sustainable economy model. The four-day expo filled Siam Square Block K, Siam Square Soi 5 and Siam Square One with about 200 booths and more than 1,000 products from 76 provinces: eco-friendly, health, GI (geographical indication) and innovation goods, from fashion, clothing and bags to food, drinks and snacks. The ministry expected more than 300 million baht in sales and business deals.

Moving the fair to Siam Square in Pride Month was deliberate: the ministry picked products for shoppers aged 18 to 40 and for LGBTQ+ customers. Visitors could join workshops making natural-wax candles, moss gardens, herbarium keepsakes and DIY key-chain bags, and watch street dance, live music, influencer live streams and a regional coffee tasting.

It was the pair’s second project with the ministry in four months, after the Memorandum of Intent it signed with IDF in February 2024 to take Thai products and services to the world through The Loyal Pin.
