Freen Sarocha as Pie in a promotional still for Rider, 2024

The premise

Somebody has to go find her

Nut is a delivery rider. On an ordinary run he meets Pie — by chance, the way these things go — and something starts between them before either of them has decided anything. Then she disappears.

Nut and two rider friends, Kai and Yod, go looking. What they find is not a missing-person story. It's a ghost story, and it turns out Pie needs something from them that nobody living can give her.

The film moves between real scares and genuine comedy, with the three riders holding the middle: friendship played for laughs until it isn't. Underneath the jokes is a story about family, and about what a mother will do for a child.

Her role

Freen as Pie

Pie is the reason the film works. She has to be warm enough that Nut falls for her in a handful of scenes, and strange enough that the audience knows something is off long before he does — and Freen plays both at once rather than switching between them.

It also sits apart in her filmography. Before Rider she was known almost entirely for GL romance and drama; here she's opposite Mario Maurer, one of Thailand's most established leading men, in a mainstream commercial horror-comedy from a major studio. Reviews consistently singled out her presence and the chemistry between the two of them.

What audiences said

Response to Rider has been warm and consistent on the same three points: the chemistry between Freen and Mario Maurer, the balance the film strikes between real scares and real jokes, and how hard the final act goes. Kai and Yod get singled out repeatedly as the comic engine — the kind of friends who never let a scene go quiet and turn dependable exactly when it counts.

Reviews mentioning Freen return to the same thing: a standout screen presence in a register nobody had seen from her before.
